Shallot mentioned the boards to me during Anthrocon so I figured there's no harm in signing up.
I'm a student in the Albany area (I live in Troy up by the Brunswick line). I've got my bachelor's and master's in computer/electrical/systems engineering, and am presently working towards a doctorate in computer science.
I've been in the area for about 7 years. Originally I'm from what you folks might call "out West". The part of the West that doesn't know if it's "soda" or "pop" or "soda pop" but any of the three is accepted without question.
General hobbies include video gaming, pen-and-paper roleplaying games, and coding. I do really enjoy Rock Band (Guitar Hero is just inferior, but if it's any consolation I have everything from GH2-GH:WoR). It's hard to find people to play with locally in general, since the music games genre has really been on the decline.
I'm also a big fan of Neopets, for better or for worse, and to a lesser extent other games under the NVWG umbrella. (That's Nickelodeon Virtual Worlds Group for those of you now wondering if I just spew acronyms for my personal amusement.) I volunteer for a Neopets help site, which actually eats a good deal of free time. But it's fun.
As far as fandom goes, I fall in that group of people that always was a fan of anthropomorphic critters and then one day was on the internet and found out "aha, there's a name for that." Discovering it through the internet of course had the obvious ... "mature" results as well, but hey, you can't expect to go around on the internet and not see "oh my!" sorts of things.
I identify as Trent, a black-backed jackal. I'm still doing a bit of building, which in part is picking up an accent and playing with what I find most natural to express while in suit. (I'll have to rummage around for a decent photo - most mine are in pretty poor lighting and I forgot to harass my handler to take some while in Pittsburgh.)
I'm what you might classify as an "introvert", by which I mean interacting with people (particularly multiple people) particularly over time drains me. It does not mean that if I see you and you say "Hi there!" I will do my best to stare at my feet and mumble random syllables in a desperate bid to make you go away. That aside, I'm all up for making new friends and meeting up.
Okay, so that's a quick "about me". I've provided my AIM in my profile since there was a nice spot for it, if you're going to contact me please please please say where you found me and who you are - I get a lot of spammers. I do have Twitter, MSN, and Skype, so if you want to get in touch that way, feel free to ask for my handles. I'll also do my best to read PMs on here, but... no promises.
